Ski Snowboard Base Flattening Tools

base FLAT IS WHERE IT'S AT
Ski and snowboard bases need to be kept as flat as possible from edge to edge...otherwise they behave in strange and unpredictable ways on the snow. Your first tuning priority is to check and correct for any high or low spots on your base...regardless if your gear is brand spanking new or veterans of many seasons. See below for the tools you'll need to monitor and keep your bases flat.

ski snowboard true bar BLACKLIGHT TRUE BAR
snowflake No, these babies don't glow in the dark like a psychedelic poster under an ultraviolet light! Instead, they sport a stealthy black finish to help reduced unwanted reflected light...this makes it easier for your eye to detect high or low spots when checking a ski or snowboard base for flatness. They are made with hefty 5/8" square hardened steel with clean crisp edges. If you handle and store it with proper care (and don't drop it on the floor!), it will serve you a lifetime. The ski model is 5" long, the snowboard model is 14" long.

ski snowboard tuning true bar KNIFE EDGE SKI TRUE BAR
This true bar is superior to square true bars because it has a sharper knife-like edge that makes it easier and quicker for your eye to detect any light appearing between it and your p-tex base...a real advantage for busy (or myopic) technicians. This precise flat-black anodized aluminum blade is not only a joy to use, but looks pretty badass, too. It's 6" long to easily span any ski base.

ski snowboard tuning base flat tool SKIVISIONS BASE FLATTENER & STRUCTURE TOOL
This has long been one of our most popular tools for. Why? Flattening a ski or snowboard base is one of the most challenging and difficult tasks for home tuners. Sure, hand sanding will do the job, but it is usually time-consuming and creates lots of unwanted p-tex hairs that take even more time to remove. Flat-filing is another option, but is rarely accurate since few files a perfectly flat to begin with and invariably bend when you bear down on 'em....creating an even more concave base. A stonegrind at the local ski shop is an alternative if you can afford it...but, as the saying goes, "the quality of the finished job is only as good as the nut at the other end of the machine". So what can ya do?
This precision hand-planing tool uses a hardened steel bar to cleanly shave off high or low spots on p-tex bases, remove existing oxidized p-tex areas,as well as shave off unwanted p-tex hairs and microhairs. Although this steel bar is also hard enough to cut down steel edges if they're too high, we recommendyou use a mill file to do that job and save your steel bar from unnecessary wear. The snowboard version relies on a 12" medium grit ruby stone blade to effectively achieve the similar results.

Both tools accommodate a variety of stone blades so you can impart a linear base structure on your skis or snowboard. A few quick passes with these tools after every week or so on the slopes will freshen up your structure, keep the base flat, and improve its ability to absorb wax. These periodic touch-ups significantly improve performance without removing excess base material.

The ski version works with all alpine or nordic skis, and comes with a 6" hardened steel cutting bar (wide enough to span nearly any ski in a single pass), a 6" medium structure ruby stone (wide enough to span almost any ski in a single pass, and the very widest skis in two passes), plus full instructions.
The snowboard version comes packaged with a 12" medium ruby stone structure blade.
Replacement and optional blades are available for imparting a variety of structures, including an extra-coarse stone for aggressively removing excess p-tex on particularly convex or concave bases (before using the steel blade).
A special 100 grit diamond stone (SVN-SSDF) is available for re-dressing stone blades and a 4” x 1” 80 grit silica carbide hand stone (SVN-BLSS)is offered for sharpening the steel blade.

sandpaper
BASE FLATTENING AND STRUCTURE PAPER
You can flatten ski and snowboard bases by sanding them with progressively finer grit paper. The 80 grit paper is coarsest, 400 grit is finest. Our stearated sandpaper cuts cleaner and picks up less p-tex and wax residue than regular sandpaper. Three full 9" x 11" sheets come in each pack. Always use sandpaper with the backing of a sanding block or sanding tube to ensure that you apply even pressure across bases.

sanding block SANDING BLOCK
Sanding a base without a sanding block can do more harm than good. This tool insures that you are applying even pressure across the full width of the ski when sanding...and not creating any unwanted high or low spots in the process.

sanding tube SANDING TUBE
This simple but efficient tool greatly increases sanding power while saving you time and work. Wrap a piece of our silicon carbide sandpaper (sold separately) around the slotted tube, and push it down the ski base using a slight counter-rotational motion. This action continually exposes fresh sandpaper, which, in combination with the tool's concentrated contact area, creates very high cutting pressure without excess force. The tube is 115mm (4.5") long to fully span nearly any ski width and full instructions are included.

sandvik scraper
SANDVIK STEEL SCRAPER

Made of very high quality Swedish steel, these Bahco (Sandvik) scrapers will hold an excellent burr to scrape off excess base material if your bases aren't flat or p-tex hairs if your base is fuzzy. Still other folks use 'em as pressure plates when clamping delaminated skis. Whatever the use (do you refinish furniture in the off-season?), try these. Measures 2 1/2" x 5 7/8" (62mm x 105mm)

burnisher tool BURNISHER TOOL
A steel scraper cuts effectively only if you impart a sharp and uniform cutting lip (or burnish) along the edge. This burnisher tool does that job better and more safely than any other we've used. It features a protective wooden grip with an angled steel burnishing rod that helps guarantee your scraper gets the sharpest and most uniform cutting edge possible. It includes an informative 7-minute DVD that will have you "drawing a burr" and "turning the hook" like a pro, so you'll get the most out of this great tool.

kunz board vise MICROHAIR BASE SHAVER
No, this ain't for shaving beards or 5 o'clock shadows...it's a tool for scraping any ski or snowboard base after they've been stoneground or hand-structured. The sharp flexible blades help remove unwanted p-tex microhairs for faster base glide. To use, tilt the handle in the direction of travel with the blade following behind...like using a paintbrush. We recommend about 10 light passes per ski, with blade replacement after shaving a dozen pair of skis.

scotchbrite pads snowflake SCOTCHBRITE PADS
These 6" x 9" abrasive pads are handy for a variety of uses, although they're most popular for scrubbing unwanted p-tex "hairs" off of bases after they've been freshly flattened or structured. We also use them to clean off the warm tips of base repair irons and pistols, cleaning wax off ski and snowboard sidewalls after hot-waxing, etc. For most effective use, back these pads with a scotchbrite holder or sanding block to ensure even pressure. For most work, start with the medium (aluminum oxide) pads, followed up by the fine (silicon carbide) pads. Always wipe bases clean after any scotchbriting to remove any loose particles left behind by the pads.

snowflake ski snowboard base prep pad OMNI-PREP PAD
These thick white pads are used to help remove any microscopic p-tex hairs left on a base after scotchbriting or fibertexing. In the past, it took days of riding before the natural abrasive action of snow crystals would scour off these drag-inducing microhairs...now you can accomplish the same job with these pads much quicker. If good glide is important to you, these pads are an essential tool. They are sold individually to be used handheld or in conjunction with a rotobrush fibertex drum.
