A wax iron that's too hot can cause at least three problems. First, excess heat can oxidize p-tex base material, literally sealing the surface so it's unable to absorb all the wax it should. safety equipment A Swedish scientific study of ski technicians who waxed x-c skis frequently was made in 1989. The study was of technicians who did bulk ski waxing over a five-day period. It was determined that their breathing capacity was reduced 10-25% by exposure to smoke from hot waxing. And this study only involved standard hydrocarbon waxes...not the fluorocarbon waxes commonly used today (see Fluorocarbons vs. Flames). Always wax in a well-ventilated area, monitor your wax iron temperature to avoid overheating wax and creating more smoke, and wear a respirator. Wear gloves when working with any solvents (such as base cleaner) and protect your eyes, hands, and clothing.
