A wax iron that's too hot can cause at least three problems. First, excess heat can oxidize p-tex base material, literally sealing the surface so it's unable to absorb all the wax it should. Second, it causes a certain amount of base structure to be lost due to heat deformation of the p-tex. Third, too much heat creates not only more wax smoke, but...especially in the case of fluorocarbon waxes...potentially dangerous fumes as well. It's recommended to use the lowest temperature setting possible to hot wax with your iron. Monitor the temperatures you need for different waxes (warmer for hard waxes, cooler for soft waxes) with this precision-milled, fully-anodized aluminum platform. It incorporates a digital read-out thermometer to measure your iron temperature to 1/10th degree C (which can be removed from the platform and used alone for measuring snow temperature), and provides a safe place to rest your iron when hot. base cleaner fluid Why risk the high toxicity and flammability of a pure petroleum solvent when this more user-friendly citric and naptha blend does a great job? It efficiently cleans ski and snowboard topsheets, sidewalls, bases, diamond stones, etc...and dries quickly, too. Just pour a little on a sheet of fiberlene, base tex paper, or shop towel and wipe off unwanted dirt, wax, grime or grunge. Special cleaner for fluoro waxes deep within bases. Fluoro waxes are resistant to solving with standard citric or petroleum-based cleaners and tend to stay in the base. Removal of old fluoro components in a base allows for better absorbtion of subsequent wax layers. Apply cleaner with a lint-free cloth, brush with a white nylon brush while wet, wipe clean and allow to dry for 5-30min. safety equipment A Swedish scientific study of ski technicians who waxed x-c skis frequently was made in 1989. The study was of technicians who did bulk ski waxing over a five-day period. It was determined that their breathing capacity was reduced 10-25% by exposure to smoke from hot waxing. And this study only involved standard hydrocarbon waxes...not the fluorocarbon waxes commonly used today (see Fluorocarbons vs. Flames). Always wax in a well-ventilated area, monitor your wax iron temperature to avoid overheating wax and creating more smoke, and wear a respirator. Wear gloves when working with any solvents (such as base cleaner) and protect your eyes, hands, and clothing.

Protect your lungs from hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon wax smoke, wax remover fumes, repair material smoke, etc. This respirator uses two filters to screen out organic vapors, acid gas, dust, radionuclides, smoke and mist. It features a non-allergenic PVC face seal to fit most faces (unless small or very large). To check fit, put the respirator on, cover the filter intakes and breathe in a little...a vacuum should form for a good mask seal on your face. If it doesn't, please send it back. ROTOBRUSHES We carry swix, Toko, and Red creek (snowboard) rotobrushes. Rotobrushes are used by many of the world's top national teams and factory service technicians...not only because they save time, but because they help create the fastest bases as well. Rotobrushes are very versatile...they can be used to remove wax, open and uncover base structure, cut away unwanted p-tex hairs and polish bases. We offer a complete selection of handles, brushes and attachments. To operate, slip the desired brush or attachment onto a control handle, clamp the handle into any electric or battery-powered drill, and start the drill. Roto-brushes are designed to operate at speeds between 800 and 2500rpm... enough to launch tiny wax particles in the air. Some control handles are available with a plexiglass brush shield to contain most of these, otherwise we recommend wearing protective eyewear whenever rotobrushing. For more info, see rotobrush tips.
