Why Remove Sidewall Material?
The files used to tune skis are generally high quality and do a fantastic job at cleanly cutting the hard steel edges found on modern skis and snowboards, but they are terrible at removing sidewall material, it simply gums-up the file. If you've ever run a file down the side edge and just couldn't get it to bite it may be that the file was running on sidewall material which inhibited it from contacting the edge. As skis are tuned over time the steel edges become flush with the sidewall, once the two are flush it is time to remove a bit of the sidewall material so the file can cut the edge cleanly. The most accurate method to remove the material is with a sidewall cutter (also called a sidewall planer), these tools are adjustable so that just enough material is removed, usually less than 1mm, just enough so the file can get a bite.
Tips:
- Remove just enough material so the file can get a bite (less the 1mm).
- Use minimal pressure on the tool, allow the tool to do the cutting.
- One long pass is preferable.
- If you get chatter marks on the sidewall (usually from to much pressure) use a bit of sandpaper to smooth them out.

Nice Tool
I've used a simple knife to eliminate top sheet 'overhang' for years but decided to give this a try. Seems to work fine but is a pain to adjust. Takes several try's to get it right. Also needs to be changed for different profile on other skis.

Versatile and Easy
Having both square and round cutters is nice if you work on a lot of skis, as I do. For Heavy Use, a dedicated round or square cutter is superior, but this is plenty of tool for most people.

Does not work with Magnetraction
The tool is good, however, it doesn't do a very neat job on boards with Magnetraction type edges. The problem is that the depth adjustment screws are too far apart and when following the wave of this style of edge. The tool doesn't cut when in the valley & removes too much when at the peak. The overall effort in constantly resetting to obtain an equal plane along the wavy edge of the board, makes this process just as lengthy as if one were to plane sidewall by hand.

Works Great
Easy to use and does a good job of removing the sidewall. Does require careful adjustment but no more than any cutting tool. Good tool for the price.

Works well, nice sharp cut
Overall it does what it is supposed to do. I would advise taking small bites and not large ones or the tool will twist and gouge. As with most side wall planers, watch the depth and height setting, they are unforgiving it you cut too deeply. This tool is a great value, in my opinion.
